Medicaid and Other Insurance
As a Medicaid beneficiary, it is possible that you will have
other types of insurance in addition to your Medicaid benefits. It
is important to understand that Medicaid is always the "payer of
last resort." This means that your other insurance will pay
before Medicaid benefits will pay.
Examples of other insurance are:
- Medicare
- Insurance you get through your employer
- Insurance coverage that a parent or spouse carries for you
When applying for Medicaid, it is important that you disclose
other insurance coverage you may have. This is important
because it will help in determining the types of programs or
services that you may be eligible for. If you do not disclose
this information when applying and are approved, you may lose your
benefits when Medicaid becomes aware of other coverage.
