Important Change to Indiana Medicaid Benefits, Effective January 1, 2013

Prescription Drug Coverage Change for Dual Eligible Members

Impact: This change applies only to Indiana Medicaid members who are also eligible for Medicare (Part D) prescription drug coverage.

Change: Effective January 1, 2013

1.

Medicare (Part D) drug coverage will include:

  • drugs called barbiturates when used for epilepsy, cancer, or a chronic mental health disorder and
  • drugs called benzodiazepines

2.

For those with Medicare (Part D) coverage, Medicaid will no longer provide drug coverage for:

  • drugs called barbiturates when used for epilepsy, cancer, or a chronic mental health disorder and
  • drugs called benzodiazepines

If you are a dual eligible member, what does this mean for you? If you are taking one of the affected drugs, for the reasons listed above, your Medicare drug coverage will now cover these drugs. Your Medicaid drug coverage will not.  Medicaid will continue to provide coverage for barbiturates when used to treat other medical conditions.  If you have questions about your medications please consult your doctor or pharmacist.
